Cape Liptrap

Cape Liptrap
The turn of the century were hard times for Australia caused by depression and drought. The newly formed Commonwealth was short of funds

and maintenance of many lighthouses was badly neglected. Automation of Lighthouses was high on the agenda and on 17th November 1913, Cape Liptrap Lighthouse has the distinction of being the first first automatic, unattended lighthouse funded by the Commonwealth. 4 days before Cape Liptrap was first lit, an automatic Light was lit on the  nearby Citadel Island. Due to its remoteness, a Lightkeeper was stationed on the small island for 6 months to satisfy uncertain mariners. These 2 automated Lighthouses complemented the manned Lighthouse at the tip of Wilsons Promontory which had been burning since 1859.

The original steel tower was replaced by the present day concrete tower in 1951. The foundations of the original tower can be seen underneath the boardwalk lookout just in front of the new Lighthouse tower.
