Point Hicks

Point Hicks Lighthouse is one of the most beautiful examples I have yet seen. It is a good 30 mins walk, after kilometres of dirt road, but well worthwhile. The tower is lovingly maintained by resident National Parks caretakers -- visitors are even asked to remove their shoes before entering the tower.

The cottages may be hired, and that's a event, now on the top of my 'todo' list.

Point Hicks, historically is very important to Australia, as it was the place where Captain Cook first sighted the land he was searching for. The first-order lens is no longer used, but the caretakers keep it in polished and spotless.

The track to Point Hicks Lightstation commences at the carpark near the Lightstation Reserve gate, 3km past the Thurra River Camp Ground. Walkers can follow the access track along the shoreline past Honeymoon Bay, a terrific spot for swimming. The track then climbs through Tea Tree and Banksia Woodlands to the Lightstation and to the promontory first sighted by Lt Hicks on board Captain Cook's Endeavour in 1770.

The concrete tower and 2 timber residences were completed in 1890. A feature of the light tower is its cast iron spiral staircase. Tours are run daily at 1pm.

The 2 light keeper's cottages each with 8 beds are available for hire. Meals are also available if booked in advance. Tariff as at June 1998 - $860-1040 per week, $160-$190 per night, for up to 8 people. Point Hicks is an hours drive from Cann River which is 450km from Melbourne.
